Goose hunting vs. Duck hunting

I recently went on a duck hunt that wasn't really that fun. We killed ducks, but I didn't really enjoy myself like I do when I goose hunt. It's bothering me so much that I have been thinking about giving up duck hunting and focusing all my efforts on goose hunting. So I have a couple of questions for you:

Have any of you experienced this?

Do any of you pretty much goose hunt only and only kill a duck if it comes into your goose spread?

I am sort of like that.. I like setting a goose spread better, I like the calling and concealment better and I like shooting them better.

Pretty much everyone I hunt with would rather hunt ducks.. I tell them to go scout them and I will go if they have something. I Do very little water duck hunting anymore, but do get excited for a field with both geese and mallards..

The last few years I have not gotten up early to scout field ducks much, go out when the geese are flying and for the most part if ducks show up in the morning Ill kill um.

Frankly, I feel that a "duck" is just a bit more challenging to harvest than a goose...my opinion. And I'm always up for that challenge!
X2

They are faster, smaller, and circle many times before making that final approach to land...best part is...the limit is higher than geese, so more shooting.

However, my favorite is packing a double limit...geese and ducks..now that is where the fun is at

Let me think back to the last time I killed a duck...must be at least 10 years! I'm not counting the ones I killed this year. They were field trial ducks so I don't count them. The one's before that were RSA ducks the dump into our decoys on the Choptank River...
Now if I had a place that was worth while hunting ducks then I might give it some more consideration, but that would be just 1 more expensive hobby. I haven't shot at a deer since 2004. Haven't hunted deer since 2005. I've poked a few squirrels, rabbits, and doves in between. There are only 2 things I hunt with a burning passion. Those being geese and turkeys. Nothing else really gets the blood flowing like those two. If you don't have a passion for it then there is no sense to do it.

I enjoy both but nothing really beats shooting mallards out of corn, birds coming from what seems like miles up in the air straight down to your blinds in seconds normally isn't something big honkers do. Can't say I would give up either.

Like talking to both and will admit may be a bit easier to wack a goose than a duck but day in day out I'd choose to goose hunt over duckin... Simply love to hear em honkig as the sail into a spread of goose decoys!

I love duck hunting and would rather do it that hunt geese. My brother loves goose hunting and would rather do it than hunt ducks. We balance each other out. He duck hunts with me and I goose hunt with him. Works out perfect.

I think shooting ducks is fun but spots are limited for me. I don't have a boat or dog. So I mainly stick to field hunting geese. Do love the bonus ducks over the goose spread.

For roughly a decade I was running big white spreads, putting out and picking up 1,000-2,000 pieces for geese virtually every open season morning and killing them pretty much by the truckload. Got so I absolutely craved duck hunting. Then I switched to a daily dose of flooded field hunting for mixed bags for several seasons and enjoyed the variety greatly. But I was tickled by the chance to move my morning blind to the duck marsh I've hunted the past six seasons, where geese are a much rarer treat and am still quite content there.

Mind you I do sometimes wish I were where high passing flights of geese were going, and am glad to get to hunt them in the afternoons. But forced to choose, I'd still take ducks.

I have a place to go to, where there are 6 1/4sections that have a bunch of small ponds, and a large roost pond about 1mile away to the northwest of them. I love taking the dogs for a walk thru there, pushing some birds off a few ponds, parking my butt in a flyway spot and plinking away. The dogs have a riot and the hunting is good most days. Usually get Teal, Mallards and Pintails, occasionally a goose or two. That is really one of my favorite hunts.
Then when spotting goose fields, I generally like to look for a duck shoot somewhere in the area. Unfortunately, field duck shoots just don't last very long, most times. But,they make a nice filler in the afternoon or the next day if we need to give a goose field a day off.
Deer meat is something that is a treat to have in the freezer for me. And it seems like a lot less work than goose hunting. Can get up at a reasonable hour, don't have to be anywhere specific most times, and I like spot and stalk on them. I find a lot of fun in seeing how close I can get to one when I spot them first. And if moose were not on draw, I'd still likely be bowhunting in Oct., nothing more fun, than torquing a bull in the rut. Maybe the draw has helped me live a little longer in that respect. Sitting on the ground with a horny bull standing 6ft away, is a bit of a heart pumper.

What is this hunting of duck they speak of?
Apparently those little green headed buggers that we feed at parks have wild relatives  Not only that but they also have "cousins" that are different colors and sizes. I googled it bro, it was like there was a whole different world out there we were never told about!

I have always refered to myself as "a goose hunter with a duck hunting problem". I enjoy both, but if I did have to give one up it would be ducks.

:) They say that the first step towards a "cure"is to admit there is a problem.I do NOT want to be cured so I guess I will call myself a duck hunter(NOT).The last time I hunted geese I had 7 mallards on the deck, AT 20 YDS., circling my goose deeks for the third time but I could see and hear 3 geese coming to the sound of my goose call.I never fired a shot at either  ...ducks landed out of range... geese kept on going to the "X".....guess THAT SAYS IT ALL  ll!!

This is a great topic! My first word was literally "Duck". I cut my teeth on ducks. Sittin on my Dad's lap in the duck blind from 4 years old. When I was old enough, we got a boat and made weekly trips to the Saginaw bay for ducks. Geese were semi rare in the marsh. We always had a few goose deke's and calls just in case, but we shot 95% ducks. When I moved to an area with less than acceptable duck hunting, I was basically forced into primarily hunting geese. It took about 5 min to figure out I really needed to learn how to call better, after that it was on. Learning to call geese well and the ins and outs of the rest of the feild style goose hunt was totally new and exciting. Definitely love to do both and couldn't see giving up either one, but if I was forced to at this point, I would have to give the edge to the honkers. The calling and flaging and decoy strategy is just all so much more interactive to me. Maybe it's because it's still somewhat newer to me, idk. I guess I will find out what my true feelings are when I move back to MI next year and can easily hunt either one. Time will tell. But if they do find the cure for either of these addictions, I will find a way to destroy it. :sniper:
