I'm looking into goose hunting in South Dakota this fall and was looking for information. Is there much luck for an average joe to find land or is it all outfitters?
I'm assuming you're targetting the Missouri River area late in the season...otherwise they're almost everywhere during the regular season (east of the Missouri that is).
Most outiftters out west, although there is some public land (field hunts) for everyone. You'll have to contact the Pierre Chamber of Commerce or the SD G&F for more info.
We hunt a ton of land early season for snows, and every landowner asks us to come back for the early season goose shoot. Getting on land is as easy as fresh baked apple pie, just need to find the right people.
The land by Pierre is good hunting, but as you come east the birds get tougher to hunt. By Pierre however there is a lot of competition, even on the public land, but those fields are pretty good.
I'm not sure about the whole state. If you could pm me or be a little more specific on what part your coming to I could help you out a little more. I'm from NE SD and there is Walk in all over. You might just have to deal with someone else coming to the same field as you.
