i just purchased a puppy and it looks like it has good instincts

Every dog can be taught to do what you want it to do, so any dog can be a good hunting dog (as long as it is big enough to what you are hunting) if you just put a lot of work and love into them. Some will not agree, but that is just my .02 cents.
One more thing. I would get some sort of book or training video. It has helped me alot.
They are supposed to be.
