I HAVE A MOSSBERG ULTIMAG WITH A 24" BARREL AND THE GUN PATTERNS GREAT WITH LEAD FOR TURKEY ,BUT IT DOES NOT WITH STEEL BB ,OR BBB WITH A MOD. CHOKE.DO I NEED A LONGER BARREL? OR DIFFERENT CHOKE WATERFOWL SPECIFIC MAYBE?ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT. GIONG TO CABELAS THIS WEEKEND TO SPEND SOME CASH
I dont see why it would pattern with lead and not steel but if I were you I would take it with me to cabelas and someone there is sure to have some advice for you. Sorry I couldnt help more but good luck figuring it out
I have owned Mossbergs for a long time. I own two different ones at the moment - an 835 26" Barrel and a 935 28" Barrel. I have never had any issues using the standard Mod Choke with steel. Both of the guns pattern very well with lead and large steel like you are describing. What brand and velocity of Steel are you shooting? I resently changed my choke selection for all of my steel and hevi-shot applications - I have gone to a patternmaster choke. It puts out an unbelievable pattern with these loads. Just my .02
Steel and hevi-shot are both very picky when it comes to chokes. And no, a 24" barrel is not too short. It is really just a matter of what feels good to you. Take all the chokes that you have a pattern them to see what works best. If you are going to cabela's, you might want to buy their choke for hevi-shot. It is only $30.
I got to the range today and tried a new choke from cabelas and 3.5" bb at 25 and 40 yrds and it patterned great! So now its time to get to the skeet range to do some practice .I have been seeing lots of honkers headin back north this week!
