I would avoid holes in any lid that you pick, and my reason is for RAIN and getting wet!

Best door we have found over the years for a pit blind is using a section of garage door track and mount rollers on the lid and then use bungee cords (the thick black ones) on the door to the track. On the front of the door we have a little lock, the type of lock you use to shut a crawl space or something. I just push that up high enough to hold the door shut. When the shot is called, the guy in the middle yanks the string and the door slides open.

What I have found is that the birds dont notice the door opening when its sliding as much as they do when you have the flip top lids or the drop down lids.

Any questions let me know and I would be more than willing to help. Its a big process and lots of trial and error when digging and making a functional pit blind.

Best advice, make sure the pit is located in a high traffic area!! This is the most important part!

Any other questions or want pics or vids or whatever of our pit, let me know...its been a meat market field for almost a decade now!
