shot this mallard hen this afternoon on a field hunt... i know the pic is taken in the dark but i didnt find this out until we were cleaning up everything and my pile of mallards just had a little surprise in it

as you can see its missing 2 toes... idk if its a birth defect or if something got ahold of it a year or 2 ago or what

My guess is fishingline, took my nephew goose hunting a couple of years ago, he shot a goose with heavy line from a "tip-up" wrapped around one leg which had caused damage and it went up around both wings and over it's back, if I can find the picture I will post it.

To me it kind of looks like it was broken and didn't heal right.

Goosechaser - thatd be interesting to see.
The one is famn near gone and the other is half there. I was thinking something got ahold of it and it never healed but i thought other input was needed since i think it was cool looking to say the least

I think you should get a hold of a PGC or DU biologist and see what they think. Could be a birth defect. Maybe a predatory fish had a thing for duck feet. It could be as Goosechaser said. It be nice to have a professional opinion to add in the mix.

Or perhaps a snapping turtle nailed it when it was just a duckling. Those critters can take their toll on young goslings and ducklings.

I would say it is probably the result of a snapping turtle. We have a pond right behind our house and every year if you happen to watch at the right time, a line of goslings will be swimming and one will be just plucked right down and never come up. We have snappers the size of spare tires! One year we had to wade out and pull a gosling out of a snapper's mouth. The mother goose was going nuts. There was NO way I was going to let a snapper take a goose that I could shoot later in the year

Could also be he had been shot at before and the ends of the toes rotted and fell off.

Found it, the yellowish area is like coliflower and was fairly hard. The line went up over each wing next to the body like backpack straps

I'd say it had been shot before. I used to count neck bands for the USFWs and it wasn't uncommon at all to see geese with deformed feet.

I wonder what was up with this goose I shot. Looks like he went a few rounds with MikeTyson. I'd imagine at some point took a bb to the eye. The eyeball was the size of a humans. Check it out! Click on pic to enlarge

If I was a goose I would want to land in my decoys.
