Turkey stories anyone????

Postby cut_un » Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:47 am

Guys, it's my hope that some kind soul, parent, neighbor or group has arranged to help you or and of your friends onto a spring "thunder chicken" this year. Please share your story. I'll not be chasing em this spring but I've always tried to get after em with someone new to the sport. It's great to see and feel the excitement of someone as they walk up to a (their)bird after the thrill of a hunt.

Hope you have and will share"your story". :welcome:

I'll share my story after this Saturday, but it's supposed to be raining all day here.

Hope you have a few fields down in your part of the state  Sounds like a great morning for a field edge and a "double bull blind"

Good Luck Buck

Alright well here's the story...Saturday was just not a good day for turkeys. Didn't hear a darn thing until about 7:30 am. Me and my buddy were standing out on a powerline and he hit his mouth call and one gobbled. He hit it again to make sure we knew where it was coming from. After that we setup on him and never heard another word from him or ever saw him.

Sunday I headed back to the club around 7:15 pm and tried to see where they were roosting. Sitting in the parking lot I heard 2 gobble about 300 yds off.

Monday morning I got in the woods before light and set up just over the hill from the 2 gobblers about 125 yds away making sure I didn't spook the turkeys. Right at daybreak they started gobbling at crows. I gave it a few minutes to brighten up and hit the call. Every time I would touch that call they would both gobble. I heard them fly down off the roost and break some sticks and mess around in the leaves so I called a little more and each time their gobbles were further and further away until they stopped gobbling.

Worse than that tho, a fella was filming his hunt and called up a BEAUTIFUL bird and he pulled the trigger and the shell didn't fire. Three times he pulled the hammer back and pulled the trigger and nothing. He was nearly in tears. Turned out the firing pin struck the primer but the primer was seated too low in the primer pocket of the shell.

Had the same thing happen years ago with some Winchester shells. Had a dimple in the primer...but no turkey. Sat. will be my first time in the turkey woods this spring but I'd think with the late spring up, they would be henned up pretty bad. I'll know more Sat evening  I'm fired up now, so bring de big birds on!

I got one. Ill give yall the short version.first day of the season my dad and I show up at his friends house. we go to the fields behind his house and try to locate a bird, nothin. so we get in the truck and go down the road to his uncles property. we all get out and try strart hootin and hear a gobble way off. so I go back to the truck to get my gun, turkey vest and decoys. well the doors somehow locked (dad accidently hit the button on the door without knowing.) so I sat there pissed and watched the sun come up. Thats how my opening day went. all wasnt bad as we didnt get the bird to gobble again. all that preperation for nothin. wasnt the best way to start the season but hey you gotta start somewhere.

Sad story Slayer, but being an old dude like myself and been turkey hunting....forever, I can remember going out and just hearing a gobbler was a good thing. Far more turkeys around today than when I started out. But boy do I like the big birds of the spring. Still remember my first turkey, a hen and of coarse, my first gobbler. Don't get much better than chasing turkeys  Bet you'll have a spare key in your pocket next time :D
