Traing the pup with lay out blind

Postby BlackHolePatch » Wed Aug 10, 2011 9:44 pm

Hey guys I have a 7 month old lab and I want to start training her for field hunting in a ground blind... What are some tips I could use to train her? Thank you.

What I did was get a dog blind and have her do her marks from her dog blind. I would tell my dog to kennel, then throw the mark and send her from there. Took a little bit but she got the hang of it after awhile.

Once your pup as mastered all of the O/B commands...and I do mean mastered.....most hunting related tasks will be that much easier.......
1st we teach, then we train, and then we hunt...7 mos old is way to young to be going into the field.... you will do more harm than good.....

but what the hell do I know....

I have my blind set up in a shady spot in the yard. When she gets tired of running around she will lay down in the blind which is what I wanted her to get comfortable with. Once that happened it was easier to get her to stay in there and work on retrieves from the blind.

YEAH... a quick little stroll around this forum should tell you all you need to know about this guy. Wackem knows his dogs and if he says it, I'll do it. This guy is a retriever training machine! How many national qualifiers you up to now? Bet it's a lot more than my zero!!!

I also trained my Lab in the yard before going out to the big world...when i knew she knew the commands and listened well...she went out on a goose hunt with us....she was 7 months old....and we only hunted with 2 guys at that age and one guy shot and i controlled the dog...
