Spit Note vs Quick Spit

Postby don835 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 7:47 pm

Maybe it's just the way I make these sounds but I have had far better response form Geese with the Quick Spit. Seems like when I jump on the Spit note I don't get the body language to turn 'em. I have went to high pitched fast clucks (bitchin' at 'em) and have had better response. Any thoughts here? Thanks in advance for your replys,

Murph.

I normally have better results with the quick spit than I do a regular spit note also. You used the term "bitchin' at 'em" and your exactly right. The quick spit is a command note(s) like your wife telling you to take out the trash, you better listen or else.

Only time I really ever find the spit note effective is getting their attention at a decent distance. I think most clucks you hear from live geese are actually quick spits, so I think they're more realistic and so I do get a much better response from them using that not than an actual spit. 'Course sometimes they love the spit, but i think they hear it way too much coming down the flyway. I don't think a lot of guys that use it use it in a realistic way so they quickly figure out that that long spit is probably coming from that thing that jumps up and stings 'em in the arse everytime. By the time they get down here, I hardly ever hear a goose do a spit note on the ground (they do do it alot in the air) and when they do do it, it's more like a moan mixed in rather than the pleading comeback call I hear a lot of guys use. I hardly ever use a spit as a come back call, and I'm not telling what I do use, that's a trade secret right there

Hey Don!

Here's a new kid I found --- with maybe a little different spin on spits?

Honestly you don't hear geese do spit notes much. Most of what they do are quick spits

I believe that Trev. I listed to hundreds of Canada's in our local park and I hear the Quick Spit a lot. I hear it most often when the Geese are dumping in to the lake.

That is interesting. I have 10 ponds in about a mile circle at my place and lotsa wetland and roads between. I have heard a distinct quick spit a couple times frm from a flying lone goose - they werent over 30 ft high, went right over my head, and I think? were kinda circling and looking for the flock and which pond they are at. The first time i heard it I was amazed as i didnt necessarily believe you folks. :o I also took note that the sound had that distinct popstart and a slightly less distinct cutoff

I love that little "bark." I'm sure it's really just a variation of a quick spit, but I do do it a bit differently than I do a quick spit. Not sure if other guys use it much, but I've had some pretty good success with it on the corners...

Guys, I'll tell ya what. The Geese are eating up the Quick Spit right now...at least for me. I think I finally found the sound that I have been hearing from the park Geese. The phrase better late than never now has new meaning to me. :D

Quick spits is one of the best notes to use in the field IMO.
