Sealing PICS UP!!!!

Postby abomb21 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 10:21 am

What do you use to kind of seal the wood inside and the wood showing underneath the trailer? Im sure all the rain and snow is going to spray the bottom of the trailer and it will only be a matter of time before it starts rotting....Any suggestions?

Have not done anything to the under side of mine.....to be honest, never thought of it. Have painted all the exposed woods, shelving & ramp with a good latex exterior paint

Don't know what plywood is used on the floor of trailers..... but I do think anything you do will be a plus. 98% of my use is over the road use but the trailer is only 10-12" off the ground, guess it does get alot of mud & moisture over time. A good power wash&drying out tinme and a sealer could add life to the floor, for sure!

I am using the spray on undercoating for the entire outside bottom of my new trailer. With the amount of raod salt that gets used up here, it should help keep it from rotting out. I got the stuff from Wal Mart for like $4.00 a can and I think it took me 5 or 6 cans max to cover the whole bottom. It dries fast, stays flexible and can even be painted. I also sprayed the whole trailer tongue and under the fenders as well. I even sprayed all along the interior edges with it when I replaced the walls with heavier plywood. I have a big can of the roll on textured bed coating for the interior to protect that.

Never thought of sealing the underside wood, I think it's a great idea. I bought my trailer used, and need to work on the toung as it's getting rusty and showing its age. Seems like a good investment to keep it in shape.

Nice work!

When i bought mime i had them put treated 3/4" plywood on the floor. I run the roads in Sask. anybody that hunts up there knows road conditions are very bad. The only mistake i made was not having the entire V nose covered in the diamond plate aluminium. Even with a stone guard on the truck lots of pits on the front.

I've had my trailer since 2003 and the floor is still solid,I've done nothing to the bottomside of the floor and anyone from the north knows that all 2003 vehicles are rusting up here. Its my work trailer so it is on the road 200 days a year summer fall winter spring!

I guess that could help as it is hardly ever sitting for long streches as a hunting trailer would!

Yup. I just hit any light rust spots with a wire brush, wiped it off and sprayed the whole tongue and frame down with undercoating spray. Its nice for absorbing the impact of rocks/gravel kicked up from dirt roads, keeping the metal protected.

That's a sweet Idea, I just inherited a silverado with some rust issues underneath it. I'm heading to wallyworld now to check out that spray... could be exactly what I need!

I suspect the manufacturers probably use a marine grade plywood on the floors as you never seem to see one rotting from the bottom very often. A call to the company would let you know for sure.

My new trailer has marine grade ply in the floor and I did note that there was SOME black paint sprayed arond the frame and cross members but it hit EVERYTHING that was exposed with that spray undercoating. Don't wana take the chance with Erie winters...

What are the boards going widthways across the trailer going to be used for?
