More or less in late season?

Postby FowlAddiction » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:19 pm

I was hoping I could get some opinions for this weekend, and our last weekend of the season. I have 12 bigfoots, 15 ghg floaters, 24 redhead shells, and another 36 older shells that don't look the greatest anymore. Also 12 of the huge magnum shells like 43" or bigger. Not sure what brand, but they look good.
The field we are hunting has been holding alot of geese (like 1000 or more)this week thanks to the colder weather pushing more migrators down. So this could be an "X" hunt or could very well turn into a traffic hunt the way this season is going. Birds pretty much have food everywhere, so they have been using whichever field they prefer that day. We are a group of 3, and all have layout blinds with snow cover's. Might get to use them tomorrow anyways. The fielf is split half with cut beans, and half chisel plowed corn. We have been setting up in the chisel plow for a better hide, but birds are using both.
I am a relatively new field hunter, and was wondering what the best approach would be as far as hide, decoys to use, and decoy placement. The wind is forcasted to be SW. I was considering setting up with our backs to the south with the 12 bigfoots around the blinds, and putting the 15 ghg floaters in a group to the NW of us like 20 yards or so. Not sure what to do with the rest if anything at all. Any opinoin is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

If you are hunting a field that geese have been you probably could get away with a smaller spread. As long as you are concealed you are in store for a great hunt! Good luck!
If I was a goose I would want to land in my decoys.

Yup, maybe a dz fullbodies and a dz shells if its cold and snow on the ground. Make your blinds disappear and if should be a good shoot.

Put out everything you got...in the late season! Heck if the conditions were right I'd throw a couple snows in off the side just to get some attention/ diversitiy. Good Luck! :goodtimes:

Oh...set-up was also part of your question...Been running two main groups with the hole in between. If they favor a side adjust your layouts or just switch out shooters accordingly. Make sure they are spaced out with some room. Not too tight "spread".

Sorry, I meant to reply, just been busy. So, in a nutshell both answers were correct. On saturday we set up in the cut corn I described above, set up the 12 bf's arounfd the blinds, and the 24 shells 20 yds upwind and out in front of us. Worked like a dream for the first 2 singles that came in. They did it just perfect and were both put down at around 20 yards. Unfortunately the weather was way to warm and the birds didnt fly that great until late afternoon, and we were gone by then.
Sunday we pooled 9 peoples worth of decoys together, and decided to just have fun and put out about 10 doz decoys all together. It was also alot colder and the birds were on the move. Our farmer buddy has a pit blind dug in, and we had 6 layout blinds to hide, which is tough to do. The first few birds were pairs and singles that were eager to land within the spread. We decided to move 3 of the blinds because the birds kept going in between the pit blind and the other 3 layouts. That was our worst mistake I think, because the bigger flocks would come in and check us over, but not commit. Obviously they were spotting our setup. We managed 10 birds and learned alot. Now we gotta wait til next september to get back at em. Thanks for the help guy's!
