making a layout blind more comfortable... how to

Postby herbeapuce » Tue Oct 11, 2011 6:48 pm

Hi guys.

yesterday was the first day I hunted in a layout blind. I spent many hours in it. an Avery blind. not top of the line but neither cheap.
my neck was sore from the bar holding the neck/seat. it's padded but not enough for my taste.
Also my butt was whining because it was pulled down by gravity all that time, plus the small bumps on the ground didn't help

I plan on bringing a small pillow for my neck and a small yoga mat the next time I go. I might also bring some ear plugs because I call loud and bad...

what are your tricks ? what do you do to make things more comfortable ?

also do some of you dig a small hole in the field to create a pocket for it ?
thanks

The only thing that I do to make my blind more comfortable is bring a sleeping for when it gets brutally cold. As far as digging in goes, yes I dig in when I can to help hide the outline. This should only be done with permission from the farmer.

A yoga mat!? Really? Hey next time buddy just call it a foam pad mmk? :stirpot: Just messin' with ya buddy! Oh BTW I found a pic of DSM at his first yoga class with Staff Sargent McGrath in the background cheering him on...

What do I do to make my layout more comfy? Find a flatter spot!!! My powerhunter has a foam pad to lay on, but that's about it. I used to have a white matress cover / pad that I used for a snow cover, but it ended up being used primarily as a floor pad or a blanket to keep me all nice and toasty in :D

I actually use a piece of that blue yogacamping mat stuff from wally world. It's cheap (only about 6 bucks) and it's just wide enough for most layouts and the texture keeps it from sliding around. I also use a sleeping bag when it's freeze your nutz cold out and just fold up my parka and stick it under my back pad to raise up the lumbar area. That way you are warm but can rise up out of your layout fast ans smooth because you aren't wearing that heavy parka.

Hey man, don't worry I found the 16 pounds you lost. Went to the doc for a check up the other day and when he weighed me  set (not sat!!!) in on his face! On the plus side he told me I was the healthiest overweight guy he's ever met. Hows that for a backhanded complement!? School lunches are lethal on the waistline! Whew... :(

I'm liking the parka under the back idea, could use a little help doing some of those sit ups late season after all the pumpkin pie, christmas ham, combos in the blind, and all those late season belly huggers!!!

I use a 1/2 thick pad under the blind for cushion and insulation. Bad part is stubble pokes holes in it. I usually slide down in the blind far enough to rest on pad not on the bar. I also sit up while waiting on Geese, then flop down when needed.

Rogers Sporting Goods has a pad that goes on the back rest to make it fluffier. Might even be a heater.

It doesn't matter what brand or how much you paid, none of them are real comfy to me

Something else that works great for back support is a square boat cushion(throwable flotation device). They are pretty cheap, durable, light weight, and hold their shape.
I had a couple lying around so I thought I'd try one and it has been working really well for the last several years.

I was also thinking a small piece of pipe insulation or that pipe wrap insulation for the bar under the neck rest area to provide a little extra padding just haven't gotten around to getting some yet.

I just bought one of the final approch hot seats, I've only tried it out in the yard. But already my blind seems way more comfortable that it was. I'll be pretty much living in my layout blind the next 4 days so I'll have a full report come next week.

LAYOUT BLINDS you whoossies, we lay on the bare ground, put a little stubble in every pocket, belt loop, shoe lace and any other hole in our clothes. Then we see who can grab the first Canada to land. Then he becomes the caller, squeezing that bird every time a new flock shows. Then we break out the shotguns. Oh....... and that is in the winter when it's clothing optional.

Well I finally field tested the FA hot seat and overall Im impressed. I no longer get a sore a$$ after 2-3 hours in the blind. Also the seat does produce heat after sitting on it for a few minutes, compairable to a heated seat in a car on low. I was surprised how much heat it produced. I would definitly recommend this to other hunters.
