Let pup chew on a feather or not?

Postby duckman1106 » Mon Mar 07, 2011 1:45 pm

Just got a new lab pup (my 3rd lab). I gave him a goose feather, and he started chewing it up today. Should I let him have it so he gets acquainted with the taste of the bird, or will chewing up a feather now lead to chewing up birds down the road?

ive heard of doing that for training gun dogs for pheasants so i assume its the same for geese. i have a shitzu hoo loves doves and anything else i kill. i take him dove hunting with me and he gets the birds i shoot surprisingly enough but thats only because they are small enough for him. the honker i killed this year with him in the blind he ran out to get and sat next to it and looked at me like "ya right u want me to pick this thing up?"

the only downside if that if ur pup eats the feather he might have bad terds in a few days

i DO NOT let my dogs or pups chew on anything associated with retrieving.........nothing wrong with getting them used to feather and scents etc......but to let them just chew on a feather could lead to problems down the road IMO.........

did you really take a friggin' Shitzu goose hunting!? WOW... I thought Gary's affinity for soft warm bunnies in the bottom of his SUB to keep his puppies dogs warm was bad, but I think that take the proverbial cake right there
