Inside the trailer.

Postby cut_un » Sat Feb 26, 2011 11:22 am

Well, my first season dragging my junk in and out of my trailer to the X , I've learned a few things along the way. A 6x 12 foot trailer is not all that big. I say that because it only took one trip to the X to realize having my atv to tote my gear in and out of the field was alot easier than dragging it. ( can't drive my truck on the fields). Also learned that that having the same brand decoys( bases) helps in the storage and placing the deeks in the spread.I'd been buying/adding to my decoys a little at the time for several years and at this point, I have many different bases, some on shelves, some in bags.When/if I hunt with the same group of guys,or by myself,I know what I need to do to get em set up...but if you have to stop and explain how to attach heads & bases to all the decoys..it's valuable time in the early hours...... So long story short,I'll be running more decoys of the same make ,brand next year. I need to "quality up" some of my decoys too. I plan to add to my Big Foot" decoys as I have more of them . also plan to add some B2s and have less motion stake decos in my spread. At present, all my lessers or on stakes, many with different systems ande again, takes time to explain.

The good note, my goal was reached... several times I might add. My seasons goal was simple... to drag all my junk to the X, have myself and the guys limit out on big fat C geese and make it home without any incident. Boy.... I had a blast! And working all those blacknecks was sometime I already looking forward to again next year
For this old goose hunter that,in the past was always wearing duck hunters camo..... This season was FUN :goodtimes:

That's why I like being brand specific. I love my bigfoots and can honestly say I'll probably never own a decoy that needs a decoy stake. When it get's warmer out I'll pull my trailer out and take a picture of the inside. It's organized confusion at it's best haha.

Been there done that on the multiple brands. A few times I went with guys who also had mixed spreads, it was a nighmare setting up.

The biggest advantage to the (stake) type decoys is storage. They just take up less space so you can haul more in a smaller trailer but they take longer to set up.

FWIW my ATV goes in the back of the truck.

Agree with ya on the stakes, they are easier to deal withy. The atv in the truck is a good move but I carry a small boat in my truck....never know when you have a few ducks on the move :goodtimes:

I bag all my decoys. It keeps them nicer, longer but does add some confusion when putting them back. I have marked all my bags with what decoys go in it. That has helped a ton. Especially when you are doing a hunt when you only need certain types. This helps to grab only the bags you need.

I do the same. When packing up I usually bag all my deeks myself, have all the other guys collect em and I bag em. That way I know what is going where. I hate when my deeks end up in bags that they aren't supposed to be in.

Cut!, Remember when I said I realized my trailer wasn't that big when I put all my gear in it?? Then you said if you can fit all your gear in it, it's big enough....Now you know what I was talkin about. :rolling:

Cut, what is your inventory?
How many full bodies
How many shells
How many silhouettes
How many layout binds
How many ATV’s

What are your methods of storage?
Decoy bags – what kind
Hanging or on shelves

Would need to set em out for the exact count T..... I have about 40 full bodys (Standards, bulls & lessers) the standards are on shelves and/or rods like you had. The lessers are in 6 slot bags. 2 doz shells & 1 doz of the swans(mag snow goose shells) Plus atv& layout blind. Will be moving my atv over more to the side and rynning a shelve to put a few more standards ..by next season. Plan to add a couples doz homemade silos to the spread too.

Cut I know its off topic but you can buy black and white old school sillo's for around $40 per dozen. At the same time you can probably make them cheaper than that but just thought I'd throw that out there cause that's pretty cheap.

you could talk to a hundred guys and get a hundred good answers,so heres my take.i have a 6 x 12 trailer.i have 4 layout blinds folded and stood up verticaly on the exterior wall, with hooks on the wall bugee corded tight.on the opposite wall i have 5 bags of sillouettes hung on hooks with carribeaner clips and bungee corded tight to the wall.i have a trash can bungee corded tight to the wall in the back of the trailer for misc. junk(extya heads.blind snow covers etc...)on the floor close to the back of the trailer i have 2 4" pvc toilet flanges with 12"of pipe screwed to the floor to hold decoy stakes(ghg and higdon).with all this said i have bigfeet, ghg, higdons, and hardcores all stacked not so neat starting from the nose,130 full bodies and 3-4 dozen shells.i like the look of different brands, not all geese look allike, and its not that big of a deal to put them out.i could easily fit 6 dozen more full bodies in my 6'x12' trailer.i know it does scratch up the decoy paint a little but not nearly as bad as you would think.320 decoys in a 6 x 12 trailer with room for at least 6 dozen more?its all in the the organization.hope this helped.

I know for a fact I can get 14 doz bigfoots in my 6x12 trailer. I combine my spread with another buddy and we all squeeze it into my trailer when gas get's too high and we can't drive 2 trucks.
