Immoral or Illegal?

Postby flight cancelled » Mon Jan 30, 2012 3:08 pm

Sat in a parking lot at the local gamelands today and watched 2 guys sneek through the woods and crawl up to a pond to shoot the geese that were on it. I believe this is legal in PA althought I do not agree with it. The problem I had was 9 shots were fired because the one person was carrying 2 guns! I reported it to the local warden but still have yet to recieve a phone call back. To make it even worse they left the geese they couldn't reach floating in the pond.

Nothing wrong with a good sneak; plenty wrong with not being able to retrieve downed game.

I've done 2 gun sneaks on snows before. Its fun.

The only illegal thing there is the fact they left birds dead in the water. I have an issue with that. They failed to make all reasonable attempts to retrieve dead or wounded game and I believe it falls under waste and wanton or something like that. It's disappointing that your WCO hasn't responded.

PA game law: all effort must be made to retrieve downed game. In leaving those birds, they have committed wanton waste. All they had to do was wait on the down wind side of the pond for their birds to be pushed to shore. Lazy and impulsive. That's the illegal part. The other part though legal, might ruffle a few fathers in that they most definetely busted a roost and showed zero skill in doing so. The 2 guns part also legal as long as both are plugged to 3 shell capacity.

While I agree these guys should have made more of an effort to retrieve the geese they killed .....a no brainer.....the second part is a little more complicated. I admire a good stalk as much as the next guy,but personally,I think it has no place in fowl hunting. I think a good sneak should be reserved for antelope and such. To me,Goose hunting is about playing the decoy game, if I fool'em,I win, regardless of the kill. Just my 2 cents.

I had a game officer tell me two guns are legal in Ohio also as long as they are both plugged. I know of guys that carry a gun loaded with duck loads and a gun loaded with goose loads on lake hunts. I personally don't want to carry that much weight. As far as jump shooting goes I'll be honest I have done it on ducks on a pond before, I have never tried it on geese though.

The thought of tolling crossed my mind a bit this year. My golden scares the heehaw out of the birds in the park, but as soon as they're on the water, they swim right over to him and watch him from about 20yards. It'd be an experience for sure... I know its not totally on topic, but another idea at least

No two gunning allowed in Michigan for waterfowl, but you can have 5 muzzleloaders with you during Muzzle loading season..... yea, that makes sense!

I gotta say I love jump shooting. Especially if you have maybe 8-10 birds on a pond. 8-10 birds doesn't make for much of a hunt if you're putting out decoys. That's usually one group of birds. But I never jump shoot unless I have a way to retrieve the birds. As for the 2 gun thing, I'm not sure I'd be quick enough to get off my first 3 and switch to the second gun before they were out of range.
