DSD Honkers

Postby john316 » Sun Jan 15, 2012 9:48 am

I'm in the process of getting the nerve to buy 3 or 4 dozen DSD decoys, other than the price is there anything to know that is negative about those decoys? I hate to go spend that kind of money and be surprised and find out that something major wrong. Thanks

I've never hunted over them, but by the way guys on this forum talk about them, it sounds like you can't go wrong. I'm not sure, but I think with the DSD's you don't have to do anything to kill geese except for pull the trigger!!! LOL I think I heard something about a new upgrade that will eliminate the need for that also.

I bought 5 dozen DSD back in July. I love em. The only negative would be the head conections. Some don't fit flush. Some seat better than others. You can glue them to elimate that problem but I didn't want to. I would buy the dsd slotted bags. The avery and Roger bags just aren't deep enough. DSD has great customer service. Not gonna beat the realism that's for sure. Good looking decoy, especially the high looker.
If I was a goose I would want to land in my decoys.

I have several dozen Ace DSD honkers... their durability is awesome. The realisms is second to none...

the head connectins like mentioned can be glued. I am not a huge fan of any ring bases, so i cut metal rods form stakes for my dsds. Single slot bags are a great way to protect the decoys;.... 6 slots get to be heavy...

I dont think you can go wrong with these decoys.... you will have birds commit like you havent seen before!

Funny you say the last part. I did notice the lack of circling this year (besides late season). Seemed like the birds committted better. Could of been that my calling is getting better, could be my hide is getting better, could be I'm always gettin better spots, could be the decoys. I'll never look back now I know that.

As a wildlife artist, I've always been impressed with the detail/realism of the honker decoys. Without a doubt these decoys most accurately portray the anatomy and form of a live goose. Period. I've been drooling over these for a number of years, actually buying a couple of the original models to test myself. If I'm being honest, and many would agree, given the cost, while they looked great, I was not impressed with the durability of the original models. For the most part, I've always enjoyed hunting over custom painted decoys, whether I've painted them myself or not, and I've always been more anal then I care to admit with regards to taking care of my gear. That said, I couldn't justify purchasing a large number of the original models if I was going to have to airbrush all of them at the end of every season. I decided to wait and see if the company would improve the durability of their product.

I was thrilled to see the guys at DSD introduce the new ACE Technology but still had questions about the durability. After watching the message boards and talking to the company throughout the first few years of testing and production I finally felt this decoy was the real deal.

Well... a couple of months ago I decided it was time to pull the trigger and purchased over 6 doz of the ACE honkers. These decoys look even better in person if that's even possible and are durable as hell. I've stepped on one and even kicked one around the cement floor in my basement.... the result was minor scuffs that would wipe off with your hand. I appreciate the amount of time, detail, and craftsmanship that went into each and every one of these decoys. Each is truly a work of art.

One last thing... I can't say enough about the customer service from Brad, Cory, and the rest of the guys at DSD. I told them I wouldn't do this but I think it speaks volumes for the kind of company they're running. Prior to placing my order, I asked Brad if he would be able to tweak the colors/features a bit to my liking and he assured me if any company could do it, it would be theirs. I don't think he really knew what he was in for... I ended up sending him a detailed diagram of features that I either wanted added or didn't want overlooked.... did I say I was anal? I wasn't sure what his response would be but he ended up calling and thanking me for looking over their product with a critical eye and assured me he would be able to hit all my requirements. He then had his guys paint groups of decoys and then send me pictures of them for my approval before moving on to the others. There were a couple minor changes but all-in-all they were perfect as far as I was concerned. That impressed the hell out of me.

I look forward to getting them out in the field...
