chokes

Postby chads » Mon Jan 09, 2012 11:16 pm

I started to pattern my new Mossberg 935 but got pulled away today. I started with the factory mod tube at about 40 yards. This may be a dumb question but I can shoot steel BB through a full choke designed for steel right? I have always thought you could only shoot steel in tubes up to mod but there are full tubes labeled for steel. also, what is the BB count in a 3 1/2" 1 3/8 oz shell. I'm shooting Kent fast steel right now. I understand weather and bird mentality will play a big part but what distances can I try to plan on for a early March snow goose hunt in central/eastern PA? Any suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks

The 935 and the 835 use the Accu-Mag choke system. They will have what you can shoot through them and the constriction for the type of shot etched on the side of the choke. I do not even bother with aftermarket chokes in any of my 835s (935 uses the same basic barrel btw) because the factory chokes shoot steel so well...better than my Carlson's Super Steel chokes in my SBEII.

Thanks, yeah I see the approved shot stamped on them I am having trouble getting past shooting steel through a full tube. Speaking of that do you ever shoot BB through the full or do you basically use just the mod or ic? Trying to figure out what I might be getting into on this early march snow goose hunt. Will be my first time out for snows. Any proffesional advice is great for us newbies. Thanks again

I'm no pro by any means but 3.5" BB through a mod choke = end of migration for some birds. I have the 3 set Carlson waterfowl chokes. IC.Mod.Full. Never even had to touch the full. The mod. works just fine and dandy. Just my opinion

I shoot #1 thru a mod and out to 50 yards is deadly. I don't like to shoot that far so i limit myself to no more than 40

Thanks to everyone. I shot it with the factory mod choke and the pattern was good at about 35 yards. Picked up a Carlson mod tonight and will try tomorrow with it. Just seemed like I should be able to get a better pattern so I thought I'd try an aftermarket one. I might be shooting as good as possible with the factory tube but there is only one way to know. Like I said, I am new to all this so it's a learning curve. I cant see shooting more than 40-50 yards with my current skills. Even that would be pushing it. I will post results between the two chokes. Thanks again. We are excited about the early march snow goose hunt and I want to stack as much in my favor as possible.

Chad ,You may find out that the larger shoot b,bb,bbb, in a tight choke will blow out faster than if you stick with your skt2 or you mod or at most IM chokes just something to help a new guy at the pattern board.

Guys, unless something has drastically changed since I purchased my 3 835s the factory Accu-Mag chokes will come marked with exactly what constriction for whatever shot you put through it that the choke is approved for. Don't over think this believe me. If the chokes are blued, they ARE NOT approved for steel shot. If they are un-blued steel they are fine for steel and will have the optimal shot size...AND the constriction etched right into the side of the choke. Its that simple...it really is.
