Postby deadeye762 » Wed Sep 28, 2011 1:45 pm

Just wondering if anyone here is familiar with chessie pedigree's. I have been searching for some time and found someone locally.

Check link out and let me know how it looks.

I am a lab owner.

Next dod I am going to get will be a Chessy. I am still 1 year from there but already started to check it out.

I am NOT an expert on Chessy pedigree. I do know the major (more popular) names. I have looked at the web site and look at the pedigree. As far as titles and aptitudes the genes appear to be there.

What is missing is a couple of health certificate. I would question that.

Important:

OFA: good or excellent

Cerf: pass and current

DM: Me I will not buy a dog that both parent are carrier, one other thing if you want to breed the dog I will only buy both parent exept of DM.

EIC: Me I will not buy a dog that both parent are carrier, for a breeding dog both clear of EIC.

Looking at all the breeding propose on the web site that would be my advise. Breeder offer waranty but these waranty dont cover the training, time and loss for the family (espacily when you have kids). Pedigree is important to show the aptitudes and also health back ground. That the way I used the pedigree.

Hope it help.

Just from what can be seen in those pedigrees, the kennel's emphasis appears to be on show, rather than field. And I'd want to know much more than can be seen on paper about those potential parents if seeking a hunting pup. I don't buy into the hopeful notion that there's no show/field split within the Chesapeake breed or that their small gene pool somehow means they've all meaningful hunting aptitude.

Don't know much but I do know that Cur San has been around for a long time breeding Chessies. I think they have a very resoectable name among the Chessie world but not sure if it's just show or show/hunting.

Deadeye I have had 6 chessies and when I first started looking for a pup I looked at Curt and Sandy's (cursan's ) chessies and as someone has already mentioned if you look at the pedigrees they only have 1 or 2 hunting titled dogs in the last few generations. Which only the last 3 generations matter as far as bloodline goes. They are mostly show dogs. If you look at the pedigrees closely you will see that in the females line 2 generations back is the male she is being bred to. She is being bred to her grandfather. That is extreme line breeding(not good) I also have a couple buddies that have dogs from cursan's and they both have hip problems I'm not saying that you will get one that will have bad hips. If you want one for hunting I think I would look elsewhere. Did you check out lakeshore's kennels ? They are mainly hunting dogs and they are in WI. There is also a guy in Md that has a litter right now that are all hunting stock. WWW.steenoutfitters.com hope this helped.

I agree with a lot of what is being said, but I didn't see anything about the eye disease PRA. It is a very common disease in Chessies and a friend of mine just found out her nine year old b*tch is going blind because of it. I wouldn't be concerned if you are looking at a breeding with ONE of the parents being a carrier but if it is a breeding that is carrier x carrier or carrier x PRA positive you will get dogs that will eventually go blind. If you are looking for an intact dog most of the show lines won't sell a breeding qaulity dog to just anybody, and for breeding purposes I wouldn't breed a PRA carrier.

Chessie breeders (a majority) unlike Lab breeders DO strive to breed a dog that can win in the show ring and can still go out and hunt. Cursan's is in a lot of today's Chessie lines. I'd be careful with any breeder of Chessies to double check their OFA scores for both hips and elbows, PRA as well as OCD in past litters.

guys...I love dogs...but as far as a family/companion hunting breed, I've found the "chessie" to be the (german shepherd) of retrievers. If you are concerned about disposition, I suggest you check out the parents. I've been around some sweetheart chessies, and some that if the owner was not present, well... Just a fyi/ my opinion. Great retriever however! Good luck.

I also forgot to mention that when hunting a chessie with other dogs there are alot of tense moments as the chessie doesn't want any other dog to retrieve the birds except them. I had mine very socialized and they were good dogs, but when it comes to hunting they want to be the only retriever. Heck when it came time to pick up all the birds at the end of the hunt he wouldn't even let my buddy pick up any birds. He stood right over top of the birds and growled. He would let me pick them up though. I have seen on several sites where people were complaining about there chessies couldn't hunt with other dogs. Just be careful.

Fwiw, I'm on my fourth Chessie, and only one ever needed a close eye when sharing hunts with other dogs, and that was because he was my first, and I didn't know it was something to train for. Have also seen quite a few Lab owners who didn't know to train their dogs to share, either.

I purchased my chessie from silvercreekcbr.com They are out of wyckoff NJ. My main concern was getting one with good hunting backrounds. The lady i got mine off is mostly show but a lot of people that bought puppies off her do field work. I was talking to some of them and her dogs had no problem learning and achieving. My pup is currently 6 months old and retreiving ducks and geese. Not bad out of the blind he just needs some work not trying to break after he sees a bird fall. Very loving and friends dog.
16 weeks old 1st retreive.

6 months old playing in ice water.

Hope this was helpful.
