Boom, Boom,Boom......... Bling

Postby goosechaser125 » Mon Jan 16, 2012 3:50 pm

Had a good hunt this morning, same field we've been hunting now for 6 days straight, my buddy and I have been hunting diffrent shifts, some days we can only hunt opposite times, am vs.pm, but the field keeps producing, 15 birds so far. pictures are from this morning on my hunt, we get to go together tomorrow a.m. so could be great. Field is about 1/2mile from X so we just keep pulling traffic. This morning I got a triple from the two flocks that came in together, one with bling, it was banded 7/1/08 about 80 miles directly North in Lakeview, Michigan (female, other bird is larger 12lbs, other is smaller 8 1/2lbs, so I suspect ma, pa & little one, group was six birds, the other flock was about 30 birds but let them go over me as the six were lower. All locked and dropping)

The bling is been hard to come by this year,I've got 33 birds and only two bands, my buddies haven't got any bands yet.

We got a couple of more weeks, and as long as the snow is not too deep and the big lake by us dosen't freeze over, we will have birds around. I think this group came down from the North because the lakes up there are frozen over and they have a little more snow. Gota love the local giants they only leave if they have too. But they are alot smarter come late season, So it is only hand painted Bigfoots and flags for me.

Good hunt!!!

Wishing I get to see a band this year, maybe with as bad as things have been around here the Hunting gods will bless me with a band at some point.

I haven't got any bling as in Northern Sask. they must have quit banding them. Nice job with the traffic. By the way is it impossible to get permission for the X.

I'm in Southwest Michigan, the X is full this morning, it's close enough to hear them when it is calm, some birds were in our field last night, we are hoping they will start bringing friends and we will bethere to meet them Saturday. Today and tomorrow howling winds, snow and frickin' cold. The lake is still open but when it shuts they will leave.

Below is one section of the X that I was able to get a picture of.....there are several hundred birds that can not be seen in this photo

Got my first goose band this morning after 3 seasons :D Did the internet check-in and found it was a 17 years old local, banded as a chick just several miles from where I shot her. The band was really wore smooth, and I figured right away it was an older bird, but never 17 yrs old.

Pulled a couple off of the X tonight, actually had over 100 circling the field at one point (first group that was going to the X) took a pair from the ones that comitted and 45 min. later another pair was circle the X but liked my winged Bigfoot better came straight in and were greeted by steel

Big one was 12lbs, two were 10lbs, little one was just under 8lbs, I am fairly sure it is a lesser

I don't think it's a lesser. I'd have to see up close pic of head though. By the pic it looks like a migrator or smaller goose compared to the big ones. Either way nice birds!

Here's a head shot of two of the birds, the second picture is of some Smelt that my boy and I caught tonight, as the field had a couple hundred geese in it before we could get in it to hunt, so we went fishing instead. Will be hunting on the X tomorrow morning if they come again. We are goning to have three of us in the Pit so hopfully I can post a picture with a "stack" of birds

A Lesser beak is about 2/3rds the size of the Standard goose from what I've seen. Your pic shows close to same size beak,, just smaller overall bird,, maybe last springs' hatch.......or anorexia issues :rolling:

Yep, if it was a lesser that beak would be short, short, short. Just a smaller resident canada.
