Avery Powerhunter vs. Final Approach Xlander

Postby michigander » Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:43 pm

hey everyone, I own a powerhunter, and there are alot of aspects about it that I am not a fan of; so I have been looking into an Xlander. I am just wondering if I am going to have problems hiding it compared to the powerhunter. Which of the two would you all pick? and why?

Id give a...gander at the ghg groundforce. One of the best blinds ever made...if your not 6'2" and 290 pounds. ;) its only 16" high the same as the xlander I think but the doors don't just lay on you.

I have hunted out of anxlander. It's deffinetly a low pro blind! Thing is, the doors aren't framed and just lay on you which can be a pita if you call alot or you're hunting in some wind and have to hold the doors shut. If you can't dig your blind down even a little bit, I'd go with the power hunter. With the bar in the screen, it's actually one of the taller blinds out there, but with it out, it gets nice and low. Again though you if you don't like the material sitting right on you, you're right back up to a "tall" blind again.

I'd go with the X-Landr all day over the Power Hunter. I would take a look, however, at the Ground Force and the Pack-N-Go. It's not so much about the height (14 vs 16 or even 18 to 20 isn't going to be what makes or breaks a layout hide). It's about the shadows and breaking up the outline. The back of that Power Hunter is not only tall, it's straight up and down. This will cast a wicked and unnatural shadow on the ground. I try to hide any shadows I cast with decoys in order to turn it into a goose shaped shadow instead of my blind. Break up the outline of your blind with stubble all around the edges. This stubble is more important than what's on the sides and on the doors. Plus the stubble on the edges, when it's built up, will make a more gradual slope to the shape of your blind on the ground, thus reducing box-shaped shadows.

Can't speak to the Powerhunter, but I own the XLandR. I really like it. Low profile and easy to carry around. The doors do lay on you, but it is not that bad. You can fix the mesh screens on the doors so that they give you room to work your call.

I've owned both. I had two powerhunters and now have two Xlanders. From a comfort standpoint the xlander is far better. From a hide standpoint they are equal. From a ease of transport standpoint they again are about equal. So to me it came down to comfort and the xlander.

What if you're 6'5" 320 lbs? What blind then, sir?

Rogers Goosebuster XL!!! I hope one finds its way under my tree this year  'course I'm a bit south of your 6'5" gigantor height, but I'm filling it out about the same these days, though some of those lbs are migrating their way south too... Down a belt notch and a pant size, so this kid might need just the Goosebuster by the time it's over!!!

The Powerhunter is much like a sleeping bag with a mesh bubble however it has more visibility. Both blinds are easy to carry with the powerhunter a little bit lighter. The FA's flaps are on your chest but can be quickly fixed with two bungee straps.

I've had both. Had 2 power hunters and sold all 2. I now have 2 Xlanders and a pack-n-go. Expanders are way more comfortable for those long days in the blind. I only use the pack-n-go in fields that have lots of cover.

Depending on how big of a guy you are, I would look at the FA Eliminator Express. They are the lowest profile out (14 inches) and have the least amount of cheap plastic $hit on them to break off. They fold up and have two shoulder straps like a backpack and are sooooo light. I also have a Powerhunter and Finisher and my Eliminator Express takes the cake
