887 or 870?

Postby berdthebirdhunter » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:53 pm

Alright, i think its time i get a real waterfowl gun, i like my 20 ga for doves, rabbit and squirrels, but i doesnt quite fit the bill for a goose gun. Im thinking either 887 or 870, im trying to stay in my budget so dont tell me to get some $2000 benneli. The 870 is an original, and i kinda like that one( im thinking super mag) BUT the 887 has the armorlokt which i REALLY like, plus ive heard it kicks like a light field load when shooting heavy goose loads. ???????????????????????? I need some opinions!!!!!

870, my friend has the 887, im not a big fan of it the amour lockt crap makes it feel like a toy, its just a plastic shell around the gun that if dropped or banged around a bit i can see it cracking right off. i dont like the way it is extremely front heavy, and when i shoulder it, i want to throw the stock above my shoulder because the stock is so light and its so front heavy.

now i love my 870 express mag, shoots great, very well balanced, and i dont worry about recoil (man up) even with shootin the heaviest loads ive used its still not bad. never had a single problem out of it, and it just keeps gettin better now tha i just put a Carlson's mod. choke in it.

and i also have a suggestion of another gun to take a look at, the Browning bps, brother had one and i liked it, shot great, never a prob out of it and they can be found for a pretty good deal used in "new" (so just a few rounds through them, and perfect) condition

Remington 870 Supermag is an outstanding gun and has a proven track record. You can also shoot 3 1/2 inch shells in it if you so choose.

My first Choice BPS, but it carries a little higher price. Next would be 870 die hard. I don't have a 3rd choice. I know 3 people with 887 and I know 3 people that wish they didn't own one.

Where you located? I live in Illinois, I have a 870 super mag you could shoot a few rounds with if that would help. How about another gun like your 20, only bigger.

I was a huge remington guy growing up; working in my grandpa's gun shop i got to see a lot of different shot guns, and what hard use did to them. It used to be that 870s (both wingmasters and express models) were durable. but over the past few years it seems the new remingtons i've owned have had a lot of issues. I obtained a new in the box 870 supermag 2 years ago, and have had ejection issues with it numerous times. the chamber sucks and require polishing. doesn't matter if its a trap load or a 3.5" goose load. Rem has also changes some parts from metal to plastic. I've got a 870 express that is 16 years old and will never get rid of it, as well as 3 870 wingmasters all 20+ years old. (not to mention a few rem 700 rifles) I really don't think there is a better pump shotgun out there than an old wingmaster. the BPS is a close second, but even those seem to have taken a slight dip in quality the past few years. If you decide to buy a new remington, make sure you fill out the warranty card. I took a little drive just before christmas to a few gun shops and pawn shops, and there are some really really nice wingmasters sitting on the shelves for really decent prices. I'm actually thinking about going back to look at a 20 gauge today and maybe bring it home.

I picked up an 870 waterfowler special 3 yrs ago, I had one instance of cheapie 2-3/4 rounds not wanting to extract. It shoots really nicely for me, finish is doing fine on it.

870 all the way   but if u want a good semi for a good price i would go with a stoeger m2000 its made by benelli and it uses the Inertia Driven system it is cleaner and more reliable. good luck

If you go to the Cabelas web site you can look at the reviews concerning the 887, most are not very good at all.
My first choice is an 870 be it an Express or WingMaster, I own both. Other good choices would be the Browning BPS or a Benelli Nova.
I would personally stay away from the Stoeger 2000, yes I know it has the inertia system of the Benelli, but the other internal part are not as well refined and there have been numorous problems with them.
As a note, the Express models do have more plastic or cast parts in them than the WingMaster but how much does that effect them? My waterfowl guns are all Express models.
Remington cataloges an Waterfowl Special on their web-site and this is basically an WingMaster in camo, the price is around $500.
Good luck.

No offense or anything but I am going to 100 percent disagree with you on that. I love my stoegers, I have 3 of them, but I have 2 condors and 1 uplander and they are the ones made in brazil. The M2000 series are made in Turkey and they are pure junk IMO. I work firearms retail and I see more complaints about the M2000 than any other gun. Yeah sure, its a "benelli" but it ain't no real Benelli if ya know what I mean. And another thing people really arent clarifying here is something about the 870's. The wingmaster is 2 3/4 chamber. That means no 3 1/2inch goose loads. The express is 2 3/4 and 3inch. And the supermag is 3 1/2 chamber. Just thought I would clarify on that one, having to know everything about guns is how I make my money  And as far as the 887 goes, I'm undecided. I really like the way it feels, but the action isn't as smooth feeling as an 870. Plus like stated above, it kinda feels like a toy with the armor lokt. So 870 supermag all the way (its what I shoot  )

I just found that out (the wingmaster), i knew the super mag shoots 3 1/2 loads, which is why i wanted it
(for waterfowl, turkey).

Stoeger guns are imported by Benelli, not made by Benelli. I would personally stay away from the Stoeger ling of shotguns, I used to work in the outdoor hunting/sporting goods store and have yet to find anybody that likes the Stoeger brand of shotguns. They are pretty much junk in my opinion. Good luck in your decision.

Now not trying to change the subject on this thread or anything, but only the m2000 series are made in turkey. And those are the crap ones. The Condor and Uplander lines (o/u & s/s) are made in Brazil and in my opinion, as an owner of 2 condors and 1 uplander, are awesome guns for the money. The uplander I haven't shot as much as the condors but they are dang good guns for the money. Havent had a single problem with them. Blueing is excellent, and the wood is nothing fancy but looks good. Just had to give my .02
