4x6 trailer big enough?

Postby fisherhunter460 » Wed Jan 04, 2012 8:43 am

I've been toying with the idea of getting a trailer. Do to cost and storage space a 4x6 seems to fit the bill. I estimated that I can get 6 dozen lesser size decoys in a trailer that size. That's guessing on the interior dimensions of the trailer and the size of the decoys. These estimates seem fair considering we can get 3.5 dozen in my dads explorer.

What would the difference in fuel economy between a 4x6 and a 5x8 and would an explorer be able to tow either without much difficulty?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I owned a 6x12. Looked huge when empty. When everything went inside, almost wasnt big enough. If I were you I would go with the bigger trailer . I rather have a lil extra room compared not enough room and you wasted your money or have to upgrade it sooner that you would have wanted. As far as gas in concerened I don't think it would make a big dif going up one size. Towing my 6x12 with a 2010 silverado 1500 on average i would get about 10 mpg if that. Highway traveling a little diferent. Not sure if that helps....Also my 6x12 held 6 dozen ghg fullbodies and a dozen shells with half floor space still open for blinds etc.
If I was a goose I would want to land in my decoys.

Get what ya think/know you can afford. You def with be able to tote MORE stuff. Size does matter, the bigger the better in this case but bottom line, it's as much about how you pack/store your coys as anything. My 6x12,single axle is about as small as I can go..... But,I tote my atv , decoys & extra gear in it..... so I felt I needed a little more room. a 6x 14,tandom axle is looking even better these days

There is a reason not to go bigger, primarily dealing with space and what can be afforded. And another consideration is what you have to tow it with. I know I can have the space for a 6' or maybe an 8' trailer, but I know I don't have the space to park a 12' trailer. Also we would still have the inside of the explorer for the blinds and extra decoys if we wanted more. I just can't see the practicality of buying more than 8 dozen decoys. I wouldn't want to set more than that up. Guess I should at least consider the 5x8.

Have to agree FH.... money being a pretty good reason. Hunting the AF, I run about 75 to 100 full bodies, plus my atv more for me is really overkill, but I'm not hunting huge fields& big flocks.... some guys run big spreads, hunting in 500-1,000 acre fields and looking a big flocks of honkers.

I picked up a 4 X 7 last year for 200.00 bucks. It works pretty well as I use all Silos although I carry the dekes in the truck and the blinds, covers, etc in the trailer. I only use the trailer for goose hunting so I leave it a buddys place so I am not hauling it back and forth, as I live about 3 hours from where I hunt. As this is all I use the trailer for I could not justify spending 2-3k on a trailer.....not yet anyway.
It was a little rough but I painted and rewired it,made a fitted cover for it, and it worked well all last season.

That is a neat trailer for $200 fixed up and painted does the job in Alberta. I may need a tiny trailer once I figure out the hitch and wiring some day.
